The first edition was 1808. Napoleon set the chemists of France to find an alternate source for sugar so as to confound the English blockades and this was Parmentier's solution where he argues against sugar beets and for extracting sugar from grapes. Sugar beets ultimately won the day as the French never quite got used to grape dextrose, and 200+ years later they still supply most European sugar.
