Rebound in modern cloth, light browning and chipping to untrimmed page edges; lightly used and a very good copy with 11 engraved plates. Partially unopened, pencil notes to front endpaper in vol 1, ownership signature to half and full titles. Separate title dated 1784 for the An Alphabetical Catalogue of English and Scotch Names of Plants. ii, lvi, (34), 424; (425)-897, blank, (32)pp.

This first translation of Linnaeus the Younger's Supplementum Plantarum (1782) which was meant to continue his father's works Genera Plantarum (1737) and the 1753 Species Plantarum as well as Johan Andreas Murray's 13th edition of Linnaeus' Systema Naturæ which he titled Systema Vegetabilium (1774). Erasmus Darwin conceived the project and enlisted Joseph Bans and Samuel Johnson - Linnaeus the younger reportedly sent an advance copy of his work for their project.
