Finely rebound in full modern calf in an antique style; raised bands, blindstamped boards. Slight fading to spine. Occasional browning and finger soiling, pencilled page numbers, minor stains in the outer margins, but a fresh copy overall. Lacking the portrait of Grand Duke Ferdinand II but otherwise complete with 75 full-page engravings. The second state dated 1667 on the title. 13 3/8" x 9", (16), CCLXIX, avvertimento, (14)pp.
800 copies were printed, 725 on ordinary paper, the earlier copies had a title page dated 1666. The only publication by this, the first academy founded to conduct scientific experiments (three years before The Royal Society). They sought to extend the work of Galileo. Though they only lasted a decade (ending the year this was printed) they exerted an outsized influence on continental science. Borelli, Viviani, Redi, Stensen, and Cassini were all mebers as well as the writer and linguist Lorenzo Magalloti who served as secretary and is often credited as editor of this volume. The work here provides the first description of a thermometer, , hygrometer, experiments on air pressure, sound velocity, phosphorescence and the expansion of water as it freezes. It also described the deviation of a pendulum from it's plane - later used by Foucault to prove the rotation of the earth.
