Most famous for his Natural and Moral History of the Indies, Acosta spent the last few years of his life as rector in Salamanca where Conciones de Adventu was written. Before that he had years on multiple trips to Peru in the 1570s (famously crossing the Andes and being one of the first to record speculation on altitude effects) and then in Mexico in the 1580s.
