London: J. Millan, 1732.
First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Item #049342
Rebound in ca. early 20th century full polished calf, gilt turn ins, marbled endpapers. Rear hinge a touch rubbed, a few minor scattered stains, foxing, added rear endpapers have browned the final couple pages, but a generally clean, bright copy. Lacking the frontis portrait. Appendix with a separate title but continuously paginated. 239pp.
A nice copy of this biography of the famous deaf and dumb seer and clairvoyant who attracted a stream of London society to his home for decades in the early 18th century. Supposedly written by Campbel himself, but not. Often, but in our view very doubtfully, attributed to Defoe. More likely written by Eliza Haywood who had earlier published two Duncan Campbel related stories (A Spy Upon the Conjuror in 1724 and The Dumb Projector in 1725) and was a frequent visitor. Campbel remains a figure of interest in historical studies, the occult, and disability studies.
