Ca. late 18th century green morocco, gilt, decorative endpapers. Light wear at edges, some darkening to spines; attractive early bindings. The first Elzevier edition of Rabelais, first title in black and red, scattered minor foxing, first vol lacking final blanks. With the bottle page on 833. The Elzevier Rabelais in a nice early French binding. Famous both for the fine typography and design and the faults of the text. Willems says it's "une édition fort jolie, mais malheureusement, c'est la seul seul mérite". Still, much sought after in the first edition. The second was printed in 1666, "moins jolie et moins estimée" (Willems 1374) while reproducing all the faults.
