Original painted mock up for an unpublished book of cut-outs. 40 individual pieces including characters, scenery, background scenes, and a mock up of the finished book (13.5" x 10.5") signed by Carlson and with his address label inside the front cover. Most of the pieces with notes and/or sketches on the verso. A number of the painted figures on card stock from puzzles and illustrations similar to Carlson's work on John Martin's Book (1912-1933). A number of the figures with attached paper stands. Pieces are numbered 1-40 except for the unnumbered book. Lacking #15.

Carlson did extensive work in book illustration and jacket design (famously the design for Gone with the Wind) but is best remembered for his pioneering work on children's puzzles, interactive games and drawing guides mostly for John Martin's Book and for his Jingle Jangle Comics. The latter was an uncategorizable mix of children's comics and a a sort of natural weirdo surrealism. Harlan Ellison said of them: "George Carlson is Samuel Beckett in a clever plastic disguise...He is Genet without hangups. He is Pirandello buttered with dream-dust and wearing water wings." A really charming collection of original commercial work from an important American cartoonist.
