Omnia Opera (Divi Ambrosii Episcopi Mediolanensis)

Basel: Froben, 1527.

First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Item #048265

Volumes 1-2 (of 4) of the complete works of Ambrosius edited by Erasmus. Rebound in full black leather, endpapers refreshed, light dampstain in the lower margin of volume 2. Old notes and ownership marks to title. Lacking a number of leaves but all with early manuscript replacements of A2, A5 and H1-K6 in volume 2. Many of the initials rubricated (red and silver) in volume 2 along with underlining in red. Scattered ink marks, generally a very fresh copy. Fine engraved historiated initials at start of sections, large margins, a finely printed edition. (24 - including the two manuscript leaves) 277pp with printer's mark on verso of final page; 250 (2) pp with printer's mark on verso of final blank (including the manuscript pages from 85-120). Adams A935

An interesting copy of the first two books of Erasmus's works of Ambrosius. Erasmus was responsible, with this edition, for beginning to separate the actual writings on Ambrosius from those of pseudo-Ambrosis or Ambrosiaster. A finely completed copy of the two volumes by a 16th century hand - the care given to the rubrication and embellishments making this "defective" copy something else entirely.
