Contemporary calf rebacked ca. late 17th century, much worn with worm trails to leather and rear endpapers, scrapes, chips, but binding remains structurally sound overall. Old bookplate to front pastedown and a purchase note dated 1592 above, old bookseller description pasted to endpaper, old ownership signature of H van Etten to title. Slight browning, a little shaken, small marginal tear in preliminaries, occasional minor stains, but a very good copy of Guevara's enormously successful guide for princes based on mostly apocryphal stories of Marcus Aurelius. (32), 395 leaves.
Translated into a multitude of European languages, Guevara's novel of princely manners was as popular in the 16th century as it was roundly derided in the 17th and 18th for its exagerations and careless treatment of historical detail.
