London: W.M. Clark, 1838.
First Edition. Hardcover (Quarter Leather). Very Good Condition. Item #046036
Contemporary half leather, edges well worn, hinges rubbed, scattered mostly light foxing and staining internally. Bound up from the original 21 parts with an added title and table - sometimes a frontis was also added, but it is lacking here. Each issue with an illustrated first page, a few other illustrations throughout. Obviously inspired by Pickwick (Nicholson also wrote a parody of Dombey and Son a few years later), each issue has a story illustrative of common life in London. Nicholson - known as Lord Chief Baron" was a widely popular and visible figure in the London demi-monde - editor, author, pawnbroker and pub-owner. Old signatures on endpapers. Size: Octavo (8vo).
