Though largely overlooked at the time of publication, it is in the principles that Keynes found "scientific explanation of unemployment" and that "the hundred-year domination of Ricardo over Malthus had been a disaster for the progress of economics" (ODNB). Malthus's theory that spending on both public works and private luxuries could alleviate recessions and downturns by creating demand and prosperity were well ahead of his time.
