Parts 1-3 of Madame de Villeneuve's Contes - rarely found complete (just one copy located in OCLC), usually as single volumes and even then just a few of each in libraries. It includes the earliest known version of the Beauty and the Beast story in volume one (La Belle et la Bête), originally published in 1740, and the sequel in volume two (Histoire de la Bête). Beauty and the Beast is remarkable for being bowdlerized and bastardized almost immediately (first by Madame Leprince de Beaumont in 1756) largely erasing Villeneuve's work. The original here is nearly 200 pages "the most extended erotic reverie produced by a woman in the 18th century" Diaconoff: (Through the Reading Glass, 2006) while Leprince's was 17. Size: Octavo (8vo). 3 volumes of the 5-volume set. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Inventory No: 047111.
