Flipper was the first African American graduate of West Point and served in distinction in the Apache Wars and the Victorio Campaign, leading the Buffalo Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry. He was subsequently accused of embezzlement and court marshaled - an unjust ruling that was reversed 59 years after his death. He volunteered for service in the Spanish American war but was rebuffed.
