Paris: Durand, Neveu, 1787.
Early Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Good Condition. Item #045800
Complete in 9 volumes bound in full contemporary acid calf, various wear at edges, surface scrapes, a few hinges cracked but all held by cords - volume 9 front board a little loose, a bit of worming to endpapers in the gutters. Scattered foxing, minor stains and tears, but very good overall and a nice and complete set with 45 plates, 2 maps, 4 frontispieces. Published 1781-1796, but most 1787.
A treasure trove of influential, if largely nonsensical, occult musings. Court was the source of the original occult trappings of the Tarot which he considers in volume VIII. A remarkable moment in history when the enlightenment love of collecting human knowledge met the lingering belief in the outlandish. Scarce complete, volume IX is often lacking.
