Contemporary acid calf, corners worn and bumped, surface rubbing, spine a little worn - quite sound overall. Front endpapers and title dampstained, old signature to endpaper, foxing and browning throughout but mostly mild. Upper right corner of page 93/94 torn with loss to about 1/8 of the text on the pages (facsimile laid in), rear endpaper lacking and pastedown dampstained, . A mostly good copy of a scarce book and one that Webster considered, along with his quarto dictionary, his most important work (see Skeel pg 153). Webster originally offered it to Matthew Carey to publish for $750, but he passed. It never achieved the success of some of his other works, but was reprinted in 1822.
