The Lives, Opinions, and Remarkable Sayings of the Most Famous Ancient Philosophers

London: Edward Brewster, 1688.

First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Item #045180
ISBN: NoISBN

2 volumes in similar, but not identical, contemporary calf (due to the gap between the 1688 date of volume one and 1696 when the second volume was finally published. Volume one is also slightly larger.). Modest wear, hinges a little rubbed and starting, wear at spine ends - both quite sound overall. Scattered foxing and staining, a few minor tears in the margins, mostly in volume one. Clean overall and a nice pair with the armorial bookplates of Thomas Cartwright of Aynho. (xiv), 589pp; (iv), 460pp with the attractive frontis portrait in volume one.

Though often uncritical, uneven, and unphilosophical, Diogenes Laertius was widely read and profoundly influential through his portrayal of the human side of the ancient philosophers. Size: Octavo (8vo). 2-volume set (complete). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Philosophy; Antiquarian & Rare. Inventory No: 045180.

Price: $1,100.00
