Burckhardt studied Arabic both at Cambridge and in the Levant, as well as the the Koran enough to pass as a holy scholar, and wandered extensively in the holy land. During his time in Syria, he rediscovered Petra in present day Lebanon. He died of dysentery in 1817, before succeeding in his ultimate goal of discovering the source of the Niger, but his papers were preserved. Size: Octavo (8vo). 2-volume set (complete).
