Cotes (1682-1716) succeeded his friend, Isaac Newton, as Lucasian professor at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1706. In 1711 he was elected to the Royal Society and later edited the Second edition of Newton's Principia. Of his early death, Newton said "Had Cotes lived, we might have known something". Robert Smith was Cotes's cousin and a fellow of the Royal Society.
