Campbell, born in Scotland ca. 1681, immigrated to the U.S. in 1717, ordained in Worcester, MA in 1721 and moved to Oxford, MA shortly thereafter. As the Great Awakening spread through the area, Campbell, who had less than no sympathy with the movement, published this collection. It stands as an important, and scarce, shot fired in the Great Awakening.
