Boston: Lee & Shepard, 1871.
First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Item #037804
Oblong green cloth with moderate general rubbing, spine ends worn, a bit shaken, a few surface marks to rear cover. Repaired tear to endpaper with a bit of loss at edge, repaired tear to title page with no loss, repaired tear to gutter of illustration 2 with no loss, tear with loss of text (one word and 1/2 of a letter to the text for page VII), repaired tear near gutter of VIII with no loss, and a large tear on the corner of illustration XIX defacing perhaps 1/8 of the page. All the repairs are done on the verso (text and illustrations are on one side of the page only) with archival tape. Foxing throughout but uneven, a number of pages show moderate to heavy foxing, many nearly none.
A rare Santa Claus book - Worldcat shows only 5 copies - from the period when the legend was still being formed. Greene has Santa as the son of Odin (as was traditional in some tales) who is distributing gifts as a repentance for his brother's misdeeds. Lovely illustrations.
