London: Sherwood Jones and Co., 1822.
Hardcover (Half Leather). Very Good. Item #037674
Half leather over marbled boards with gilt sporting figures on spine. Wear at corners, occasional scuffing and chipping, a few hinges just starting, volume 13 missing a section of the spine label. Bound up in 14 volumes with the scarce June 1828 volume bound separately. The subscriptions had dwindled by the end, so the final volume is considerably rarer than all the others. Tooley 64.
A lovely complete run of this sporting periodical, with 154 plates, 50 hand colored with 10 folding (including a lovely group of the racetracks of Great Britain and a terrific colored, folding, boxing scene) plus a folding table of cock fighting shorthand. One plate with a different name than Tooley gives (Grouse Shooting vs. Hunting for Moor Game - moor game is the red grouse, doubtless just a different state of the same plate). Plates depict fishing, shooting, cock fighting, dog fighting, boxing, fox hunting, coursing, horse racing, etc. Some offsetting and foxing to plates. 152 plates in the first 13 volumes, of the 153 called for by Tooley, lacking one of the three instances of a gymnastics plate, in volume 5 (there are identical plates in volume 9 and 10). Two plates in volume 14. Size: Octavo (8vo). Text is clean and unmarked. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Over 3 kilos. Category: Sports & Pastimes; Inventory No: 037674.
