Lorini practiced as a military engineer in France, Flanders and Venice before the publication of Fortificationi, which was hugely successful. He offers designs for 5, 7 and 9 sided fortresses, discusses the practical aspects of their construction (layout, cost), gives a history of ancient defenses, the equipment and tools used in construction (including a very early illustration of a diving bell, a square box with a glass window for viewing) and then examines the real world case of the defenses of the Grand Duke of Tuscany (in the added Sixth book).
