Charleston: Mccarter & Co., 1856.
Second Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good. Item #030270
In brown blindstamped cloth, rubbed with a few surface tears to cloth. Ownership marks o endpaper, slight foxing else unmarked. 169pp. Quite popular in its time, this was perhaps the longest sustained poetic defense of slavery. Undoubtedly and emphatically racist, the inclusion of the Carlye quote "Irish Whites have long been emancipated and nobody asks them to work, or permits them to work, on condition of finding them potatoes" also points to its deeply paternalistic viewpoint. Variously listed as the Second and Third edition, the first was 1854. Sabin 28424 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2 lbs 0 oz.
