Nisbeth's account of life in America, largely from a Swedish and Norwegian immigrant's standpoint in Minnesota. Important and unique first hand accounts of life for recent immigrants from Scandanavia. Nisbeth went on to found a Norwegian/Swedish language newspaper in San Francisco called California Scandinav that encouraged Eastern Swedes to immigrate to California. Scarce, in original yellow wraps with light chipping at edges, a small tear to paper on spine, previous owner's name neatly on title page. 328pp with an ad for Nisbeth's translation of Horace Greeley's Road to Economic Independence on rear of wrappers. Sections have been translated for scholarly purposes and for publication in Christmas in Minnesota, a collection of 19th century stories (Nisbeth's selection includes descriptions of the carrying on and spread of Northern traditions in Minnesota).
