Couple of other thoughts for those who don’t read blog comments:

Henry (Tahnan) points out that the song playing in the background is Aqualera do Brasil – a Portuguese song that was the theme of Terry Gilliam’s dystopic masterpiece, Brazil.

Ben Hyde has some interesting thoughts on Wegman’s and the future (and past) of alternative currencies.

I went to my first Super Wegman’s in Auburn, NY, in the early 80’s. It was a wonderland – a pizza shop, chinese food, and aisles that went on forever. Here on the east coast there wasn’t anything bigger than a supermarket so Super Wegman’s (which in retrospect was about half or two thirds the size of one of those monster Stop and Shops) was a revelation – a whole new way of living. Of course, it turned out, in Texas they were building Wal-Marts that you could have misplaced a couple of Super Wegman’s in, but who knew? In the late nineties I was in Auburn for a Book Fair and went to Super Wegman’s but it was covered in a layer of grime and hadn’t been updated since it opened. I think the restaurant was gone and it looked small and sad. You can’t go home again, I guess; especially not if you live in a Super Wegman’s.

Anyway, thanks Ben for the Wegman’s reference it was like a little proustian madeleine – except it was a supermarket instead of a cookie.
