Recently Discovered in the Back of the Store

June 19th, 2010 § 0

There’s been a great deal of poking around and scanning lately.

Printed by Johann Amerbach, 1487-88, from “Lectura super quinque libros Decretalium cum Repertorio Alphonsi de Montalbo” by Nicolaus Panormitanus

The paper was handmade from pulped rags and remains unravaged by the passing of time.

Cribs, the 1876 edition

May 28th, 2010 § 1

The Book of American Interiors, 1876

A rather charming volume detailing the libraries, and dining rooms of literary figures. No bedrooms in the 1876 edition – this isn’t France, after all.

H.W. Longfellow's Library

D.G Mitchell's Library

Mitchell was a travel writer and novelist – Oliver W. Holmes, père, called him “One of America’s pleasantest writers” which seems pretty effed up, but maybe he was trying to be nice.

Cullen Bryant's Library

Yes, what episode of 19th century Cribs would be complete without a stop at Harvard.
