The modern font used on this site is Galliard BT (hopefully anyway. It's possible you don't have Galliard on your computer and are seeing this in times or courier. If this is true, download Galliard here as a zipped archive or just pretend.). Galliard is a modern type face created by Matthew Carter as a rendition of the fonts of Robert Granjon. Carter has created a number of popular and functional fonts such as Georgia, Helvetica, and Verdana. Galliard is a serif font meant to be legible at small sizes. The older typeface on this site was harvested from a book of French plays by Jean Mairet published in the first third of the 17th century. The font is a version of Garamond, a popular and influential 16th century font. Claude Garamond (see his wikipedia entry) was a teacher and colleague of Robert Granjon. So, you see, it all makes sense.

The graphics used on the site are all from the Mairet book above and from a late 18th century collection of Science Fiction called Voyages Imaginaires which included translations of Gulliver's Travels, Robinson Crusoe, as well as great French tales such as Cyrano de Bergerac's Voyage dans la Lune and L'Histoire des États et Empires du Soleil (a plate from the latter is below).
